Vikings advance to NSIC/US Bank Tournament Championship with win over Bulldogs

Will face No. 1 seed St. Cloud State at noon on Saturday

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana baseball team used a late three-run inning to keep its season alive, winning 9-4 over No. 4 seed Minnesota Duluth on Friday night in an elimination game in the NSIC Tournament. The Vikings improved to 37-16, while the Bulldogs closed out their season at 35-16.

The victory set up a rematch against No. 1 seed St. Cloud State (50-3) in the NSIC/US Bank Championship game, which is set for 12 p.m. at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field. The Huskies defeated Augustana earlier in the day on Friday to get to the championship contest.

Patrick O'Donnell led the Vikings at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a game-high three RBI, his ninth multi-RBI game this year.

Alex Fink had a game-high three hits in the victory.

Lincoln Voss (3-1) picked up the win in a relief role, going 3.2 innings, giving up no runs on one hit. Voss also racked up six strikeouts against the 15 batters he faced. The Fargo, N.D. native showed good control of the hill all night, throwing 46 of 71 pitches for strikes.

The Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning with RBI hits by O'Donnell and Jacob James highlighting the strong start at plate for Augustana.

Minnesota Duluth got itself on the scoreboard during its turn at bat in the second with a two-out solo home run to left field by Bo Hellquist, his second homer of the season, to make it a 3-1 game in favor of the Vikings.

A Fink RBI double to left field scored Patrick Fiala from first base, upping the Augustana lead to three in the top of the third inning. For Fink, it was his 54th RBI of the year, third most on the team.

The Bulldogs tied this one up with a three-run inning of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Hellquist capped off the scoring charge with a two-RBI double to left center with one out. Kyle Comer scored earlier in the inning on a wild pitch by Jacob Blank.

A leadoff double to left field by Jimmy Heck put Minnesota Duluth in business to start the sixth inning. But the combination of Troy Pilkington and Voss on the mound proved enough to get the Vikings out of the jam, keeping the game tied at 4-4.

Voss again got himself out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh after putting runners on first and second base with one out. The sophomore answered by getting the next two Bulldog batters out to close out the inning with the game still tied at 4-4.

A leadoff single from Fink and a double to deep center by Bryce Berg put Augustana in scoring position in the top of the eighth. O'Donnell then came through in his at bat to put the Vikings up for good with a single up the middle that scored the two runners, making it 6-4. Marcus O'Neill added another run to the scoreboard with an RBI single to left to score O'Donnell, pushing the Augustana lead to three.

Alex Beals made it a five-run game in the ninth, hitting a two-RBI single through the left side, giving the Vikings some added insurance runs.

Voss closed this down in the bottom of the ninth with a giving up no hits and striking out his fifth and sixth batters of the game to secure the win for Augustana.
