SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – No. 2 seed Central Missouri scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back in a 6-0 win over No. 1 seed Augustana in the first game of a best-of-three series in the Central Super Regional. The Jennies (48-14) are just the second team to hold ninth-ranked Augustana (53-10) scoreless this season.
Katie Shockley led the 20th-ranked Jennies to the win holding the Vikings to just four hits on the afternoon. Shockley tied a single season record at Central Missouri with her 26th victory of the season improving to 26-6.
Jenelle Trautmann (32-4) was tagged with just her fourth loss of the season after allowing six runs, three earned, while striking out six.
The Jennies grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning that started with a leadoff double by Ali Jo Rogers. Rogers then stole third and came around to score the game's first run on an RBI single by Lindsey Dawson. Jakki Prater then reached on an error and UCM had two runners on with no outs.
After a walk loaded the bases, Alex Leonhart made it a 2-0 game on an RBI groundout. Madison Hood put Central Missouri up 3-0 with a sacrifice fly before Trautmann got a strikeout to end the inning.
Augustana was set down in order in the first two innings of the game and Central Missouri extended its lead to 4-0 in the top of the top of the third when Leonhart singled to right field to score Prater, who led off the third with a single before moving to second on a single by Lauren Mabe.
Karlee Koopman broke through with Augustana's first hit of the game with a leadoff single in the top of the third but the Vikings were unable to move a runner past first base before
Mackenzie Alstott was caught stealing to end the inning.
A leadoff single followed by a walk allowed the Jennies to take a 5-0 lead when Dawson singled through the left side to score Katie Giacone who singled to lead off the fourth.
Trautmann led off the fifth inning with a single for Augustana and
Jordan Schaffer later singled with one out in the inning to put runners on first and second. Koopman walked on a six-pitch at bat to load the bases and after a foul out by
Maddie Merriam, Alstott nearly came with a base-clearing hit if not for a great running catch by UCM's Makayla Schoonover in center field that ended the threat.
Giacone led off the top of the sixth with a double for the Jennies and she came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Dawson that allowed Central Missouri to take a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Vikings went down in order in the fifth and left two runners on in the bottom of the seventh after
Carly Peterson reached on an error and
Jordan Schaffer doubled with one out in the inning. Shockley got the final two outs of the inning to strand two runners on base and keep the Vikings off the scoreboard for just the second time in 2015.
Augustana and Central Missouri will continue play in the best-of-three series tomorrow with game two which is set for 10 a.m. at Bowden Field.
