SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -
Dajon Newell and
Nick Andreas received most valuable player recognition during the Augustana football annual awards banquet Jan. 21.
Newell, a redshirt freshman running back, was named the offensive MVP, while Andreas, a senior safety, earned the award on the defensive side.
In nine games, Newell rushed for 884 yards and seven touchdowns. In addition, he caught 20 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown. He was also named the Vikings' offensive back player of the year.
Andreas' career statistics include eight interceptions, 219 tackles, and 5.5 sacks. In 2011 he picked off four passes to share the team lead, and was the Vikings' third leading tackler with 80.
Linebacker honors went to junior
Austin Luecke. He led the Vikings in tackles with 107, including 10 for loss. He also forced two fumbles and intercepted a pass.
Junior running back
Phil Uecker shared the hustle award with senior running back
Curt Truhe. Uecker was most productive near the goal line with six touchdown runs.
Seniors received the bulk of the position awards. Included were receiver
Sam Holsen;
Tyler Lynch, offensive line; San O'Keefe, defensive back; and
Ben Wardell, defensive line.
Zac Kallas (defensive back) and
Jordan Marshall (receiver) shared the coaches' appreciation award.
Augustana posted a 6-5 record in 2011, its fourth straight winning season. Holsen, Andreas, Kallas, Luecke, O'Keefe, and Wardell were named to the All-NSIC first team, while Newell and Lynch were second-team choices. Marshall received honorable-mention recognition.
