SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana head baseball coach
Tim Huber announced Wednesday the signing of Alex Fink from Springfield, Minn., for the 2013 season.
The 6-foot-2, 180-pound infielder is a two-time All-Tomahawk Conference first-team choice. Fink was his team's most valuable offensive player his junior season after earning defensive MVP honors the previous year.
Fink batted .508 his junior season for Springfield High School and posted a 4-0 pitching record with two saves. His first team laurels included all-area, all-section and all-state. He was also named academic all-conference for the second consecutive season. The Tigers were 12-6 and finished third in the conference.
As a sophomore, Fink was first team all-conference, all-area and all-section. In addition, he was named the top underclassman in Minnesota by Baseball Factory.
A broken thumb limited his freshman season to five games. Fink will be the team captain when the Tigers take to the diamond this spring.
Said Huber: "Alex is an outstanding athlete, a great student, and an even better kid. He and his parents have been on campus many times and did a lot of comparing between Augustana and some other top baseball programs in our conference. When I made contact this summer, Alex told me if he goes Division II, Augustana would be his first choice. Like other guys we have recruited the past few years, the combination of an outstanding academic institution and an improving baseball program was a great fit for Alex. Alex is a three-sport prep standout, and he has always been the guy with the game in his hands. Once he focuses on baseball, the sky is the limit for him,. Whatever position he ends up playing for us, I expect him to excel. He has a very high baseball IQ and once he fills out he has a chance to be a very talented player in our conference."
Augustana finished the 2011 season 30-24, marking the program's second consecutive 30-win season. The Vikings finished fifth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with a mark of 20-12 and made their first NCAA tournament appearance in school history.
Located in Sioux Falls, S.D., Augustana College is a member of NCAA Division II and competes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
