Despite a four-game sweep of Northern State this weekend, the Augustana baseball team will not advance to the conference tournament after finishing seventh in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Although they did not qualify for post-season play, the Vikings broke a slew of records, including the record for most wins in a season after going 34-22.
As a team they also set a record for most hits in a season (635), most doubles in a season (107), most home runs in a season (73) and most RBI's in a season (442). In addition, the Vikings stole more bases this season than in any other (138) and had a team batting average of .352, the best in the history of the program.
The Vikings also broke many individual records.
Deryk Marks and
Nate Baumann are now one and two in the record book for hits in a season. Marks belted 94 hits while Baumann had 93 to take over the top spot formerly held by Jeremy Schultz, who recorded 72 hits in 2005.
Charlie Dubanoski is also fourth on the list with 71 hits this season.
Marks also took over the record for doubles in a season. This year he hit 21 doubles, passing Brian Hunt, who had 18 in 1995.
The 2010 Vikings also now hold the top three spots for home runs in a season as Dubanoski hit 15, Baumann hit 14, and Marks hit 13. Dubanoski is tied with Brad Bornhorst for the top spot as Bornhorst hit 15 homers in 2003.
Baumann is actually tied with himself since he also hit 14 bombs last season. Marks ties with Andy Salmela, who hit 13 home runs in 2001.
That trio is also among the top for RBI's in a season. Marks (78 RBI's) and Dubanoski (63 RBI's) both passed Gary Walz for RBI's in a season. Walz hit 61 in 2006. Baumann had 60 RBI's this season, making him fourth on the list.
This year's Vikings also now hold the top four spots for runs scored in a season. Baumann is number one with 79 runs in 2010 while
Drew Heithoff is second with 65. Marks is tied with former record-holder Mike Loberg (2006) with 57 runs this season while Dubanoski is fourth after scoring 56 runs.
Baumann and Heithoff are also the top two in stolen bases in a season. Baumann's 40 and Heithoff's 38 surpassed the record of 24 set by Pete Roback in 1995.
On the pitching side,
Bret Severtson had a team-best ERA of 2.66 this season, ranking him sixth in Augie history in season ERA.
He also tied the single-season saves record that he set last season with seven saves. In addition, he now takes over the career saves record previously held by Louie Opatz, with 14.
