Division II Learfield Sports Directors' Cup complete standings
Strong finishes by Augustana's spring sports programs have propelled the Vikings into the top five of the Division II Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced today.
The Vikings are one of 291 teams that compete in NCAA Division II athletics. The top-five ranking positions the Vikings in the top 2 percent of all Division II participants.
Augustana has scored 117.50 points so far during the spring sports season to bring its yearly total to 477. The women's golf team finished 10th to earn 67.5 points, while the women's tennis team's 17th place finish earned Augie 50 points. The Vikings' fifth-place ranking is the highest the program has ever been ranked. Augustana was in ninth place after the winter sports season and 35th place after the fall sports season.
"This accomplishment is a credit to the high quality student-athletes and coaches we have in our Augustana family," athletic director Bill Gross said. "We are pleased to be reaching our stated strategic plan goal of competing at the highest levels in NCAA Division II."
Augustana is one of three Northern Sun Intercollegiate schools ranked in the top six. St. Cloud State University is fourth with 527 points, while Minnesota State University, Mankato, is sixth at 465.50 points.
The final Division II spring standings will be released Wednesday, June 23, in conjunction with the
2010 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup luncheon taking place at the NACDA Convention.
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup is a program that honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program, the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup honors those programs achieving success in many sports, both men's and women's. Began in 1993-94 for Division I by NACDA and USA Today, it was expanded in 1995-96 to include Division II, III and the NAIA. Each institution is awarded points in a predetermined number of sports for men and women. The overall champion is the institution that records the highest number of points in its division's Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings.
