Women's Golf Wins NSIC Championships

Final Results

Augustana captured the 2009-10 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Women's Golf Championship Sunday in Brandon, S.D. Freshman Emily Kvidera earned individual medalist honors.

The Vikings led the tournament the entire way, and finished with a team score of 950, seven strokes better than the number two finisher, Concordia-St. Paul. Rounding out the top three was Minnesota State with a team score of 974.

"I'm so proud of our team," head coach Peggy Kirby said. "The weather was unbelievable on Friday, with 40 mile an hour winds and rain all day. Today was also very difficult with the wind and cold and the girls never gave up and stayed focused!  We played with intensity and finished, which was key today."

Kvidera is the NSIC Champion, shooting a 77 on Friday, a 76 on Saturday, and then putting in a stellar 73 round on Sunday for a total score of 226. Her score beat the next highest finisher, Jill Preeshl of Upper Iowa, by eight strokes.

"It is great to have an NSIC Champion," Kirby said. "Emily played some amazing golf with tremendous focus.  As a freshman, she played with great confidence and trusted her game this weekend."

Kvidera was also proud of her team's effort and ability to play well despite less-than-ideal conditions.

"It was really cool how the team came together and played well in the same tournament," Kvidera said. "We didn't let the weather bother us which was key. It's so exciting to have won a conference championship in my first season."
Kate Tobin also finished in the top 10. Her total score of 239 tied her for seventh.

Jennifer Benoy carded a 242 to tie for 12th while Kelly Lauer shot a 245 to earn 17th place. Kelli Lowry tied for 25th place by shooing a 254.

The Vikings, who are ranked No. 2 in the Central Region, will next compete at the NCAA Super Region 3 Championships on May 2-4 in Lake City, Minn.
