Despite starting down 6-1 in the first game, the Vikings rallied to collect a doubleheader sweep of Upper Iowa Wednesday in Fayette, Iowa. Augie scored 28 runs in the two games.
Augie (26-20, 13-9 NSIC) took the lead in the first game, scoring one run in the second inning, but the Peacocks put together back-to-back scoring innings, plating six total runs in the third and fourth innings combined.
The Vikings answered by scoring four runs off of four hits in the fifth inning. They followed that up with a three-run sixth inning, led off with a home run by
Nate Alfson.
The Peacocks (13-25, 8-14 NSIC) would score three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but were no match for the Augie hitters, who collected 21 hits.
Nick Lehnen recorded his first win of the season, allowing no runs in two innings of work.
The Vikings kept rolling in the second game, scoring 12 runs off of 12 hits.
Gates Cook and
Dan Morrison each hit a home run, bringing the day's tally to six.
The big inning in the nightcap was the fifth, where the Vikings scored six runs off of five hits.
The Augie pitching team of
Tyler Pierson and
Bennett Johnson allowed only one earned run each. Pierson went five innings, earning the win to improve his record this season to 2-3.
“Offensively we took care of things today,” head coach
Tim Huber said. “Our hitters bailed us out of trouble in game one and never looked back.”
The wins were much needed for the Vikings, who dropped out of the Central Regional rankings after going 2-5 last week. They are in seventh place in the NSIC, with only six teams qualifying for the NSIC Tournament.
“We played well in all phases of the game today and hopefully it's a sign of us peaking at the right time,” said junior infielder
Drew Heithoff, who was 3-of-6 in the first game. “We will need to keep the intensity we showed today going into our big series with Southwest (Minnesota State) this weekend.”
The Vikings will play two doubleheaders this weekend with the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State. On Saturday the games will be played in Marshall, Minn., starting at 1 p.m. On Sunday, the Vikings will host the Mustangs at Ronken Field for a Senior Day competition beginning at 1 p.m.
