The Augustana baseball team lost twice to Winona State Sunday at Ronken Field, 11-3 and 9-8. The Vikings' record dropped to 22-15 on the season and 9-5 in NSIC Conference play, while Winona State improved to 22-6 and 12-2 in the league.

Three of the four games in the series were decided by one run. Winona State won Sunday's final game 9-8 and Saturday's opener 7-6, while Augie took the Saturday nightcap 5-4.

In the opener, Winona State posted one run in each of the first four innings before exploding for three in the fifth and four in the sixth. The Winona State pitching staff was able to keep Augie under wraps most of the day, other than a two-run second inning, where a Drew Heithoff single scored Nate Hewes and Brian Knight. The Vikings were able to score another run in the eighth when Charlie Dubanoski hit a solo home run, one of two he hit in the doubleheader.

Derek Hansen picked up the loss (2-3) for the Vikings, giving up six earned runs on seven hits in four innings of work.

In the second game, the Vikings kept pace with the Warriors, but came up just short in the end. Scoring opportunities were available for Augie, but they could not take advantage, stranding 10 runners on base in the game.

Going into the bottom of the seventh and final inning, the Vikings found themselves down 9-6. Rally time ensued as Nate Baumann drove in Hansen to cut the deficit to two, and Heithoff hit a line drive to center that scored Chris Glynn to cut the lead to one.

However, the Vikings could not muster another run as Deryk Marks grounded out to third base, and Winona State escaped with the win.

Tyson Gau lost his first game of the season (2-1), giving up seven earned runs on nine hits while striking out two in four innings of work.

On Tuesday evening, the Vikings will take on the University of Sioux Falls in a single 9-inning game at Harmodon Park at 5 p.m.
