The Augustana softball team completed it trip to the Rebel Spring Games with two losses to Division I Cornell Sunday in Orlando, Fla. Cornell defeated the Vikings 5-4 in 10 innings in the first game and 17-11 in the second.
The Vikings fell to 16-5 overall and went 9-5 in Rebel Spring Game competition.
In the opener, Augie tied the score at 4-4 in the seventh inning when
Elizabeth Murray singled home
Jenny Brown. One inning earlier, Murray hit a solo home run to open the scoring for Augie, and
Brittany Coufal doubled home Chelsea Durland and
Kelsey Kalkman to complete the three-run sixth.
The game went to extra innings, and a runner was placed on second base at the beginning of the at-bat for each team. Neither team was able to score the runner until Cornell's Kristen Towne reached on a throwing error and Elise Menaker scored from second for the 5-4 win.
Brown went 2-for-5, scoring one run. Murray was 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs and one run scored.
Ashley Meyer picked up the loss for Augie, while Elizabeth Dalrymple earned the complete game win for Cornell.
In the second game, the teams combined for 28 runs on 30 hits.
Cornell opened up a 4-0 lead before Augie posted five runs in the second. Cornell's 6-run third put the Bears in the lead again 10-5, and three more runs gave the Bears the 13-5 advantage going into the bottom of the fifth.
Augie tallied five runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the game to the sixth, but Cornell posted 4 more runs and held the Vikings to one in the sixth. A scoreless seventh ended the game in Cornell's favor 17-11.
Traci Fransen went 3-for-4, scoring two runs. Coufal was 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs and Kalkman and
Shelby Thompson were each 2-for-4.
Lauren Marx picked up the win for Cornell while Meyer (5-2) took the loss for Augie.
Augie will next travel to Minnesota, Crookston to face the Golden Eagles in a doubleheader on April 2. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
