Augustana pounded out 38 hits and scored 35 runs to sweep a non-conference doubleheader from Minnesota, Crookston Monday in Winter Haven, Fla. The Vikings won the opener 16-4 and the nightcap 19-1.
With the sweep, Augustana evened its record at 8-8.
In the opener, Augustana scored the first seven runs of the first game. After scoring a single run in the top of the first inning, the Vikings erupted for six runs in the second.
Nate Baumann was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Zach Cimburek lined an RBI single,
Deryk Marks blasted a grand slam to right center field to give the Vikings a 7-0 advantage.
UMC cut into the Viking lead by scoring 4 runs in the third. P.J. Zwach roped a 2-run triple and Casey Woodside followed with a 2-run homer to make the score 7-4.
Augustana got one of the runs back in the fourth inning. Marks belted a two-out double of the center field fence and later came in to score on an RBI single by
Charlie Dubanoski, his second of the game.
The Vikings extended their advantage in the fifth inning as they scored 5 runs on 4 hits, including RBI singles by Marks and
Drew Heithoff. That made the score 13-4.
In the sixth inning, Augustana increased the margin to 16-4 with 3 runs on 3 hits.
Nate Alfson lined a 2-run single, while
Ben Ludwigson added a run-scoring single.
Ezra Campbell picked up the win on mound. He pitched 5 strong innings, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits. He struck out 4. Alfson pitched the final 2 innings, allowing just 1 hit while striking out 3.
Marks led the offense by going 4-for-4 with 5 RBI and 4 runs scored. He was a triple short of the cycle. Dubanoski added 3 hits and 2 RBI for the Vikings, while Baumann had 2 hits and scored 3 times.
In Game 2, Augustana jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Alfson and
Dan Morrison each lined 2-run singles. After UMC scored in the top of the third, Augustana added 4 more runs to increase the lead to 8-1.
Jose Martinez highlighted the rally with a 2-run double off the left field fence.
The Vikings blew the game open in the fourth inning as they scored 11 runs on 8 hits. Alfson and Morrison each blasted 2-run homers in the inning. Morrison also had a 2-run triple.
The Vikings, who finished with 18 hits in the contest, were led by Morrison, who finished the game 4-for-4 with 3 runs scored and 6 RBI. Alfson was 2-for-3 with 2 runs and 5 RBI. In all 11 different players picked up base hits and 10 players scored at least 1 run.
The beneficiaries of the offensive explosion were pitchers
Grant Larson (2-0) and
Nick Seliski. Larson worked the first 4 innings and struck out 5 while allowing only 3 hits and 1 unearned run. Seliski struck out 3 and surrendered just 1 hit in 3 innings of relief as he picked up the save.
Augustana is back in action Tuesday when the Vikings take on Minnesota Duluth in a non-conference doubleheader at 9:30 a.m. EDT.
