The Augustana volleyball team lost to Wayne State 3-0 Friday night at the Elmen Center. Match scores were 27-25, 25-23 and 25-22.
The loss drops the Vikings to 2-2 in the conference and 7-9 overall while Wayne State collects their 12th straight win and improves to 15-2 overall and 4-0 in NSIC play.
Augie led for most of set one until an ace by Wayne’s Lea Hartigan tied the score at 19-19. The teams then traded points until a blocking error by Augie locked the score at 22-22. Augie scored three points in a row to earn set point at 24-22, but the Wildcats weren’t done. A block by Wayne followed by a kill from Hartigan tied the score at 24-24, but a service error by Tali Frederickson gave Augie another set point. The Wildcats then scored three points in a row to earn the 27-25 victory.
The Vikings also led by as many as four points in set two, but the Wildcats clawed their way back in, tying the score at 18-18. Freshman libero
Grace Sanders served four points in a row to give Augie the 22-18 advantage, but the Vikings recorded three attack errors in the next four points, allowing the Wildcats to tie the game at 22-22. A kill by senior outside
Jenna Hultgren gave the Vikings a one-point lead, but Wayne State would score the last two points to win 25-23.

Blythe Johnson moved the score to 21-22, but Wayne would not relinquish the lead and won the set 25-22.

Megan Bezdicek led the Viking offense with 13 kills. Sanders recorded a match-high 26 digs for the Vikings and Johnson had six blocks. Freshman right side
Jordan Spatenka recorded a career-high five kills and five blocks.
The Vikings will be back in action on Tuesday as they play St. Cloud State in the Elmen Center at 7 p.m.
