Game 1
The Vikings started off the double header with a solid outing on the hill from
JaColby Anderson (2-1), who gave up just 1 hit in 6 innings of work, while striking out 6 Marauder batters.
Anderson had a no-hitter going, until the leadoff batter in the fifth inning connected with a single through the left side of the infield.
Offensively, the Vikings got on the board first in the third inning when
Ian Strum belted a 2-run home run over the leftfield fence on a full count, two out pitch.
In the next inning, Augie pounded out 8 runs to knock out two of the Marauders pitchers, including starting pitcher Daniel Massinburge (1-1), who took the loss for U-Mary.
After two walks,
Nolan Miller loaded the bases with a bunt single.
Andy Ahrendt then drove in a pair of runs on a single through the left side, which was followed by a single from Tom Hill to load the bases.
Strum was then hit by a pitch to score a run from third, and
Nate Baumann followed it with a double down the right field line to score 2 more runs.
Charlie Dubanoski then cleared the bases on a 3-run home run over the right field fence to make it 10-0.
Strum finished the first game 1-for-2 with 3 RBI and scored 2 runs, while Baumann went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored.
Dubanoski had a 1-for-3 day, picking up 3 RBI, while scoring a run and Ahrendt went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI.
Game 2
Augustana edged the Marauders 6-2 in the second game, on another solid pitching effort from an Augie pitcher.
Tyler Pierson (1-3) went 6 innings on the mound for the Vikings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 3 to get his first win of the season. Nate Watson (0-5) took the loss for the Marauders.
The Marauders got on the board first with a single from Duane Kiyota through the left side in the top of the third.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Vikings tied the game as Strum connected with a double, which was followed by an error by the third baseman to score Strum.
As the ball rolled towards left field, the shortstop picked it up and threw it over the first baseman’s head to advance Baumann to third on the play. Baumann came home to tie the game on a wild pitch.
Augie threatened in the bottom of the fourth, as
Dan Morrison led off with a double, which was followed by a bunt single from
Mitch Anderson to advance Morrison to third.
On the next pitch, Morrison was then thrown out at the plate on a suicide bunt. The bases were then loaded on a walk and again the door was slammed on Augie as the inning ended on a double play.
The Vikings took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the fifth as Anderson drew a walk with the bases loaded to make the game 3-2. The play was then followed by straight steal home by Baumann to put the Vikings on top by 2 runs heading into the top of the sixth.
Augustana added 2 more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 6-2, as Baumann drove in Strum on a single after Augie scored on a passed ball.
Jeff Green faced three batters in a solid top of the seventh to end the game.
The Vikings will be back at it Tuesday when they take on Dakota Wesleyan University at 4 p.m. in Mitchell, S.D.
