Errors Plague Vikings in Loses to Fort Lewis and Colorado School of Mines

The Augustana softball team was beaten by Fort Lewis College and the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) Sunday on the final day of the RMAC/NSIC Crossover Tournament in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Vikings lost to Fort Lewis, 9-8, and CSM, 10-8.

The Vikings fell to 0-6 on the season, having dropped all six of its tournament games. The Vikings committed 17 turnovers during the tournament, including six on Sunday.

In the opener, Fort Lewis got on the board early in the second inning when Chelena Coulston singled home Joanna Young, and Amanda Willmon scored on a throwing error during the play to put the Skyhawks up 2-0. The Vikings countered with a run in the third inning when Kayla Henke scored on a passed ball.

The Viking bats erupted in the fifth inning to put the Vikings up 6-2. With two outs in the fifth, Taylor Kapsch scored on Ally Rutherford's single through the left side. Chelsey Durland then singled to score Erin Bohlmann. After Traci Fransen doubled home Rutherford, Britt Stewart hit a double of her own to score Fransen and Durland.

Ashley Conser singled in two RBIs in the bottom half of the inning to bring Fort Lewis within two, but the Vikings added more insurance runs in the top of the sixth and seventh to take an 8-4 lead. Brittany Lipetzky scored on a Henke single and Elizabeth Murray scored on an error on a throw on an Erika Wolner single.

With three outs to work with, Fort Lewis made the most of its remaining opportunities. Amber Massey doubled home Ashley Hibbs, Stevie Benedict singled in Natalie Janes, and Willmon singled in Massey to bring the Skyhawks within one at 8-7.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Desirea Gil singled through the left side to score Willmon and Kassie Haubert to win the game for the Skyhawks.

Henke and Fransen each went 2-for-4 with 1 run and 1 RBI. Wolner was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Bohlmann took the loss in 1 2/3 innings, giving up 5 runs, 2 earned, and 5 hits. Kelly Ottis started and pitched the first five innings, giving up 3 earned runs on 9 hits and striking out two.

In the second game, Colorado School of Mines scored quickly in the first when Jackye Lagen homered, scoring Kaleigh Starr from second. The Vikings answered to tie the game in the second, when Wolner homered, bringing home Fransen.

Sarah Van Lingen doubled home Margie Cone and Katie Kocman singled in Van Lingen to put CSM up 4-2 in the third. Kocman doubled to score Sarah Lustgraaf and Taylor Cayou to put CSM up 6-2 in the top of the fourth.

Bohlmann homered to tally another run for Augie, but CSM was able to score twice more in the fifth when Lustgraaf singled in Dani Murphy and Kocman to push the lead to 8-3.

As in the first game, the Vikings offense came to life in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on six hits. Henke led off the inning with a solo home run, and Fransen safely bunted Rutherford home. Kelsey Kalkman singled Fransen in, and Wolner singled home Kalkman to bring the Vikings back within striking distance at 8-7.

CSM added another run in the sixth when Van Lingen scored on a throwing error. Rutherford countered with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to bring the deficit back to one at 9-8.

CSM pushed its run total to double digits, 10-8, with a Cayou single to score Allysia Cisneros in the seventh. The Vikings were unable to score in the seventh, stranding two runners on base.

Wolner went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Bohlmann was 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Mickey Anderson picked up the loss, her first of the season, giving up six earned runs in four innings. Stewart came in for relief and threw three innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits.

Next up for Augie is a trip to Omaha, Neb., to face Nebraska-Omaha in a doubleheader on March 10. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
