Augustana had two wrestlers finish third in their respective weight classes at the to highlight a strong opening weekend of the 2009-10 season at the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open in Brookings, S.D.

Returning national qualifiers Jay Sherer and Lance Peters each finished third. Meanwhile, two other Vikings, Al Meger and Nate Herda, placed fourth in their weight classes.

Sherer, a 141-pounder, opened the meet with a first-round bye before pinning Matt Leach in just 1:11. He then recorded an 11-4 decision over Scot McCullough to reach the semifinals. There, Sherer lost 6-5 to Vinny Pisani. Sherer capped the tournament with a 3-2 win over Jason Jeremiason.

Meanwhile, Peters, a heavyweight, also went 3-1 on the day. He scored an 11-1 major decision over Tabor Martin in the first round before defeating Hugh Malone 12-5 to reach the semis. However, Peters dropped a 5-4 decision to eventual champion Taylor Escamilla before edging Aaron Field 7-4 in the third-place match.

Meger and Herda each went 2-2 in earning their fourth-place finishes at 121 and 149 pounds. After a first-round bye, Meger scored a 15-1 major decision over Phile Levine and a 4-3 decision over Mike Garofalo. In the semifinals, Meger lost 11-2 to Pat Hunter before falling 4-2 to Justin Solberg in the third-place match.

Herda also received a first-round bye before downing Isaac Banks by an 11-2 major decision. He then edged Steven Monk 5-3 before falling to Esai Dominguez 22-10. In the third-place match, Herda fell 6-4 to Nick Hagar.

Augustana will compete in the Dakota Wesleyan Open next Saturday, November 14.
