Augustana Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams Finish Second at Pre-Regional Meet

Junior Tom Karbo earned a first-place finish to lead the Augustana men's cross country team at the Pre-Regional Meet in Wayne, Neb. Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, freshman Anne Pfeifle was the top Viking finisher on the women's side, coming in third and helping the women to a second-place finish.

The Augie men finished with 39 points, just seven points behind team champion Minnesota State Moorhead. Karbo completed the race in 33:21, six seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

Sophomore Travis Beniak came in third overall in 33:38 and junior Matt Braithwaite finished in ninth with a time of 34:06. Freshman Ryan Evans finished 14th in 34:39 and senior Matt Heesch took 18th place, covering the course in 35:05.

On the women's side, Augie finished with 57 points behind U-Mary with 24. Wayne State also finished with 57 points, but the Vikings came out on top since their sixth runner crossed the finish line before Wayne State's sixth runner.

Four Vikings finished in the top 20. Pfeifle ran the course in 22:48 while senior Caitlin Polgreen finished in 10th place with a time of 23:24. Sophomore Courtney Rasmussen came in at 15th with a time of 23:44, while junior Laura Johnson crossed the finish line just one second behind her for a time of 23:45.

Both teams will compete next at the NSIC Championships on Oct. 24 in Bemidji, Minn.
