Ty Copsey Finishes Second, Vikings Eighth at Midwest Classic

Ty Copsey turned in a runner-up finish in his weight class to help the Augustana wrestling team finish eighth out of 22 teams at the Midwest Classic, which concluded Sunday in Indianapolis, Ind.

The 18th-ranked Vikings, who were in sixth place after Saturday’s first day, had six wrestlers in action on Sunday and finished with 62.5 points. First day leader Newberry won the team title with a score of 149.5 points. Wisconsin-Parkside was second at 118.5 points.

Copsey, who is ranked fifth in the nation at 197 pounds, split two matches on Sunday to finish the tournament with a 3-1 record. In the semifinals, Copsey, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, defeated third-seeded Keeno Griffin of Newberry 4-2. But in the finals, Copsey dropped a 6-1 decision to top-seed Josh Ohl of Ashland.

The Vikings had two wrestlers finish sixth, two more finish seventh and one place eighth. The two Vikings who finished sixth were Chism Fink at 149 pounds and Brian Schultz at 174 pounds. Adam Schlee (133 pounds) and Jay Sherer (141 pounds) placed seventh, while Mitch Lunning was eighth at 184 pounds.

S chultz had the toughest afternoon of all the Vikings, going 0-3 on the day. The No. 2 seed, Schultz opened the day by getting pinned by third-seeded Josh Whitelock of Newberry in 5:22 in the semifinals. He then dropped into the consolation bracket where he dropped a 9-6 decision to fourth-seeded Jeff Havelka of Findlay. Then in the fifth-place match, fifth-seed Luke Rynish of Wisconsin-Parkside edged Schultz 7-4.

Fink began the day by scoring an 11-1 major decision over Ashland’s Tommie Grazi before getting pinned by third-seeded Latra Collick of Newberry in 4:48 in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth-place match, Mesa State’s Keith Johnson claimed an 8-4 decision over Fink.

Schlee went 1-1 on Sunday en route to his seventh-place finish. He dropped a 4-0 decision to Findlay’s Mike Peraino in his first match before rebounding to pin No. 6 seed Brandon Kirchner of Wisconsin-Parkside in 4:03 in the seventh-place match.

Sherer also dropped his first match on Sunday. Sherer lost a 15-7 major decision to A.J. Milanak of Gannon before edging Jeremy Parker of Limestone 3-2 in the seventh-place match.

Lunning dropped both of his matches on Sunday. Ohio Northern’s Matt Alexander, the No. 8 seed, earned a 12-1 major decision over Lunning in the wrestlebacks. Then in the seventh-place match, Lunning dropped a 2-0 decision to West Liberty’s Mitch Knapp, the fourth seed.

The Vikings will next compete next Saturday when they take on Central Missouri in a dual in Warrensburg, Mo. The dual is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
