The Augustana men’s golf team put together a promising second round of play to finish in sixth and seventh place at the Augustana Fall Invitational, which concluded Monday at Elmwood Golf Course.

The Augie Blue team finished the invitational in sixth place with a two-day total of 620, while Augie Gold finished in seventh place with a 625.

While the team finished in sixth and seventh place out of eight participating teams, the Vikings improved its scoring substantially from Saturday to Sunday.

After day one, the Augie Blue team finished with a team score of 312, while the Gold team shot a 319. On Monday, Augie Blue improved to a team score of 308, while Augie Gold shaved 13 shots off its first day total, finishing with a team score of 306.

Nine out of 11 golfers on the Vikings team improved their scores from day one to day two of the tournament, with Jeff Christenson and Austin Kern both improving their scores by seven shots.

Aaron Hieb finished with the best team score of the tournament, finishing four over par 148 after shooting a 76 in Monday's second round. Meanwhile, his brother Eric Hieb shot a second round 79 to finish tied for 18th place at 153.

Augie's Jon Emerson would have finished with one of the best rounds of the day, shooting in the low-70’s, but his score was wiped out after himself and two other players - St. Cloud State’s Alex Dawald and Concordia-St. Paul’s Scott Bullock - shot from the wrong tee box.

Brett Bennett of South Dakota had the best individual score of the invitational shooting a 2-under 142. Five players finished tied for second place with a final score of 146.

North Dakota took the team title after shooting a second round of 293, giving them a final score of 594. St. Cloud State finished one shot off the lead at 595 after shooting a 303 in its second round . Upper Iowa finished in third place at 596 after shooting a 292, which was the best round of the day.

The Vikings will play again next Sunday and Monday in the first round of the NSIC Tournament at Eagle Valley Golf Course in Woodbury, Minn.
