Viking Tracksters Turn in Top 5 Performances at Derek Miles Open

The Augustana men's and women's track and field teams turned in some strong performances in their first action of the indoor season Wednesday at the Derek Miles Open Wednesday at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D.

Highlighting the meet for the Vikings was Daniel Black. Black captured the title in the men's mile in a time of 4:24.91. Teammate Matt Heesch was sixth in the race in 4:35.11

The Viking men had two other top 3 finishes. In the 60-meter hurdles, Paul Mallory crossed the finish line in a time of 8.74 to finish in second place. In the 800 meters, Augustana's Brian Werner placed third in a time of 1:57.68.

On the women's side, Noel Bentele had a good meet as she placed in two events. She finished second in the weight throw with a mark of 51-00.25. She added an eighth-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 36-03.00.

Teammate Rachel Christiansen turned in a shot put of 38-09.5 to finish fourth in the event.

Also turning in top 5 performances were Annaliese Pepin and LeAnn Severson. Pepin placed third in the 400 meters, rounding the track in a time of 1:00.36. Meanwhile, Severson finished fourth in the 800 meters in a time of 2:25.30.

The Vikings are now off until January when they will venture back to Vermillion to compete in the John Dalton Open.
