Seniors Amy Puthoff and Whitney Hofer each had big games to help lead Augustana to a 90-73 non-conference victory over Doane in women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Elmen Center.

Augustana, which improved to 3-0 on the season, shot 57 percent from the field in the second half to break open a game that the Vikings led 33-32 at halftime. The Vikings connected on 20 of 35 field goals in the final 20 minutes to help Augie outscore the Tigers 57-41 in the second half.

Puthoff and Hofer played big roles in the second-half surge. Puthoff scored 14 of her 21 points in the second half, while Hofer netted 16 of her season-high 21 points after intermission. For Puthoff, it was an historic second half as she became the 24th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. Needing 13 points at the start of the game, Puthoff now has 1,008 points.

Hofer nearly posted a double-double as she grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds.

Augustana came out strong in the second half, scoring the first 6 points of the period to open up a 39-32 lead. Puthoff sank a pair of free throws and added a layup, while Hofer tossed in a layup of her own to spark the rally.

But Doane (5-2) wouldn't go away. Despite trailing 52-43 with 15:31 to play, the Tigers used a 10-2 run to make it a 1-point game at 54-53 with 13:21 left in the game. But as quickly as the lead dwindled, the Vikings built it back to 9 points as they countered with a 10-2 run of their own to make the score 64-55 with 10 minutes on the clock.

Puthoff then buried three 3-pointers and Hofer added two easy buckets as the Vikings increased the lead to 16, 77-61, with just under 6 minutes to play in the contest.

Freshman Faith Tinklenberg was the third Viking to reach double figures as she came off the bench to pour in a career-high 10 points on 4 of 8 shooting.

Augustana finished the afternoon shooting just under 41 percent from the field. However, the Vikings shot just 27 percent (11 of 41) in the first half. Doane shot just over 46 percent in each half to finish at 46.3 percent (25 of  54) for the game.

Lindsay Anderson led Doane with 23 points, while Hannah Helman added 14. Vanessa Munter tossed in 12 points, while Amy Fox chipped in with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

Augustana is off now until next Saturday, November 29, when the Vikings compete in the NSIC Holiday Hoopsfest. Augustana faces Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday in a 5 p.m. contest at the Sioux Falls Arena.
